Propagation
is the process in which a plant is produced from the parent
plant. This can be by a variety of methods including seed
collecting and cuttings. Some seeds may be difficult to
germinate as they may require specific conditions in which to
do so. Some need warmth others cold, some even require smoke
or fire. Variations may also occur as the seed will grow into
a different plant than the parent it came from. Seeds can be
collected from the parent plant when you feel the seed pod is
ready. |
| Try and pick a day when it is not windy if the plant
has to remain outdoors, if it can be transferred inside then
the weather does not really matter. Cut off the seed head and
place upside down in a paper bag. When the seed pods have
opened separate the seeds that have fallen out and put them
into an envelope. Label clearly if they are to be stored,
store where they will be cool and dry. |

The joy of propagation is
threefold, firstly you only ever need to buy a plant once and
you can continuously enjoy it for years to come long after the
original has died. Secondly all those admirers you get who
love your plants and ask you where you got them from will
enjoy receiving replicas as gifts. Thirdly in the case of
growing fruit, vegetables and herbs, in today's world it is
getting increasingly difficult to ensure the quality of our
food and to find plants that have been grown without the aid
of chemicals and enhancements. By growing them yourself you
can maintain your own local, organic, fresh produce at next to
no cost other than the initial outlay. |
