Low Growing Rockery Plants & Alpines
NOTE: Most rockery plants are NOT true alpines but any low growing plant that can be used to similar effect to create a stunning display. The plants listed below are a mixture of both, all available to order online.
Alyssum saxatile Golden Queen Alyssum saxatile - 'Golden Queen'
An attractive ground-hugger with grey foliage and masses of light yellow clusters of flowers in the spring. Vigorous and showy; prune it back hard after flowering.

Alyssum Oriental Night Alyssum - 'Oriental Night'
Dramatic violet-purple blooms smother the lightly spreading, ground hugging plants. Ideal for rockeries. Alyssum is really a hardy annual, but as it is small seeded, best results are achieved from an indoor sowing.

Alyssum maritima procumbens Avalanche Alyssum maritima procumbens - 'Avalanche'
If you want a sweetly scented carpet of snow white flowers, this is one of the best performers. A selection which is vigorous and uniform, starting to flower extra early and continuing throughout the season. Easy to grow and a must for beds, borders and the rockery. Flower summer. Height 6cm (2.5in).

Field Pink - Dianthus cruentus Field Pink - 'Dianthus cruentus'
A lovely little alpine, which is a native of the Balkans. The upright flower stems bear clusters of pinky-red to almost white flowers in late spring and summer. These bob happily above the long, bluish-green, evergreen foliage. It is easy to grow and the bees and butterflies will love you for it.

Dwarf Aster - Aster 'Starlight'
Hardy Annual - One of the best dwarf asters available. Aster Starlight is an intriguing mixture of attractive, spider-like blooms in shades of blue, purple, scarlet and rose that smother the compact plants. Flowers early and over a long period in borders, rock gardens or patio containers.

Showy dwarf evergreen shrubs which spread quickly over rocks and slopes and make ideal ground cover. The attractive foliage is smothered from late spring with masses of 2.5cm (1 inch) flowers resembling wild roses in pink, lemon, copper, red, purple and white.

A compact, low-growing geranium that flowers continuously until autumn, this variety has pretty pale pink flowers with darker pink veins above dark green, deeply cut leaves. It is also drought tolerant once established. Try it in a rock garden, at the edge of a raised border, or as part of a cottage garden scheme.

This low-growing, evergreen perennial is perfect for the front of a sunny, well-drained border, rock garden or raised bed. Since it actually prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil it's a good choice for a site recently cleared of builders' rubble.

Compactness is out of favour with this variety. The habit is much more trailing than other alyssum making it an excellent variety tor hanging baskets, window boxes, cascading out of pots and containers and of course bedding, borders and rockeries where it spreads happily to form an excellent, lightly scented cerise carpet.
