Nest boxes are a wonderful, effective way of not only enticing birds into your gardens but also allowing the birds to live and breed there safely. Bird boxes come in many forms and are suitable for use no matter the size of the garden; complete with holes that vary for each species of bird they provide security away from predators.
It has never been more important than now to encourage wildlife into our gardens due to the declining numbers of certain species and we can help to sustain numbers if we all do our bit to help.
However it simply isn’t a case of setting up a few nest boxes and hoping the birds will choose to live there, they need food and an appropriate environment around them to sustain their brood. This can be achieved without having to recreate your garden substantially. A few simple changes can prove to be very effective such as seeing what grows naturally in your area. By taking advice from nature itself this is usually the best way for allowing wildlife to integrate successfully. Plant flowers that will attract insects which in turn will feed the birds, if your area has a lot of concrete areas place pot plants on them, try to provide a water area such as a pond or a bird bath and keep all major jobs to a minimal so as not to disrupt any wildlife you may already have.
Once you have succeeded with attracting birds into your garden you will find that you may get a few regulars, there is nothing better than sitting in the garden and watching a few old friends come and go. However if you find that the birds are simply not coming then it may be necessary to put out some supplementary food to entice them in, seeds and nuts are ideal for use in the garden, bread can be used but it must be replaced if it goes stale and mouldy and try to ensure that the food you put out stays at a higher level so as not to attract vermin. Milk should never be left out for birds as it can be dangerous for them to ingest but other dairy products are fine.
